How much should your cat eat? Get a daily calorie target and exactly how many cups of dry or cans of wet food that means — all from the veterinary RER formula.

For weight loss, enter your cat's target (ideal) weight.
Dry — per cup
Wet — per 3 oz can
Check the kcal ("ME") figure on your food's label.
Your cat needs about
261 kcal/day
🐈 neutered adult
≈ 0.7 cups of dry OR 2.9 cans of wet per day
Estimates only — always check your food's label and confirm with your vet.
How the math works

We start with your cat's Resting Energy Requirement: RER = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75, where kg = pounds ÷ 2.2046. Then we multiply by a life-stage factor to get the daily calorie target: 3.0 kitten 0–4 months, 2.0 kitten 4–12 months, 1.2 neutered adult, 1.4 intact adult, 1.0 indoor/inactive, 1.4 active, 0.8 weight loss (using target weight), 1.8 pregnant, 2.0 lactating. Cups of dry = calories ÷ kcal-per-cup; cans of wet = calories ÷ kcal-per-can.

The best guide is your food's own kcal label and your vet — especially for kittens, pregnancy, or weight loss.
